The squid takes a bite out of its food with its beak. The radula then grinds the food in the buccal mass. The esophagus then moves the food into the stomach where digestion takes place. The stomach is lined with cells that take the nutrients from the food and pass them into the blood stream. The remaining food is then compacted and discharged into the mantle through the anus. In the mantle, the water current will carry the waste away from the squid and into the water around it.
