Fire Sponge Digestive System
The Fire Sponge is one of the several sponges found in Western Atlantic and Carribean ocean waters. They get their names from the burning sensation you recieve when you touch the body of the sponge. They are have extremely fragile tissue which creates the bright red or orange color of the organism. Even though this animal doesn't move, it is still able to digest food and live as an independent individual.
Digestive System
Being that a Fire Sponge cannot persue their food, they let water pass through their cells and absorb any particles that it touches.
- The Sponge opens up its cell pores.
- Water gets pushed into the collor cell by the current and force of the flagella.
- Food in the collor cell then gets eaten up by the food vacuole and transported around the cells.
- Excess water gets pushed out of the central vacuole by the flagella
